What better way to creep out your friends and spread fear through your family at your next Halloween party than with these Cockroach Cupcakes. I found the idea in “What’s New Cupcake” by Karen Tack and Alan Richardson and thought I would give them a try.
All in all, they were pretty easy to assemble but beware that the caramel wings should be added just before you head out to the party as they get soft overnight from the moist frosting and turn into drippy, oozy sugar pools. They are good for many hours though on the party buffet but just cannot tolerate being decorated the night before. So beware of that…
My friends were pretty spooked and some guests even flat out refused to eat them based on the sheer idea of eating a cockroach. It’s funny how the mind works, isn’t it?
My kids thought these were awesomely frightening and they will adorn the Halloween table again this year to gross out more of our unsuspecting guests. Mu-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! (Enjoy)
Creepy Halloween Cockroach Cupcakes
Creepy Halloween Cockroach Cupcakes are a great Halloween treat that is simple to make and fun for the kids to help with and eat !
- Step 1: Frost cupcakes with chocolate icing.
- Step 2: Microwave about 6 caramels at a time for about 10 seconds on high. After that flatten the squares of caramel out, then cut to desired shape for wings.
- Step 3: Next, press the wings and dates together to make a cockroach body. Then carefully cut a brown M&M in half and place it at the very front tip of the date and wings. I secured mine with a small dot of frosting Place a couple of spoonfuls of chocolate icing colored black into a ziploc baggie and make a tiny cut on the tip of the bag. Squirt out two lines of frosting onto the body to make the antennas.
- Step 4: Now, place the cockroaches onto the cupcakes and you're done. Ghoulish, right?!
