What Is Spinach Dip Bread Boat?

A Spinach Dip Bread Boat is a hollowed loaf of French bread filled with creamy spinach dip and baked until hot and golden.

Instead of serving dip in a separate bowl, the bread becomes the vessel. Once baked, the loaf is sliced into handheld portions with crisp crust and rich filling.

This version is a warm, baked spinach-dip bread boat rather than a cold bread bowl.

Ingredients (& What They Do)

French Bread Loaves – Create the sturdy shell that holds the filling and crisps during baking.

Frozen Chopped Spinach (thawed and well-drained) – Adds texture, color, and classic spinach flavor.

Cream Cheese (softened) – Forms the rich, creamy base of the filling.

Sour Cream – Adds tang and smooth consistency.

Mayonnaise – Enhances creaminess and helps the dip bake evenly.

Shredded Mozzarella Cheese – Melts smoothly for structure and mild flavor.

Grated Parmesan Cheese – Adds depth and savory balance.

Garlic (minced) – Provides aromatic flavor.

Salt and Black Pepper – Balance and enhance all ingredients.

How to Make Spinach Dip Bread Boat

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper [paid link].
  2. Slice each French bread loaf lengthwise. Hollow out the center, leaving about a 1-inch border to form sturdy bread boats.
  3. In a large bowl, combine softened cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, garlic, mozzarella, Parmesan, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth.
  4. Fold in the thoroughly drained spinach. The mixture should be thick and evenly combined.
  5. Spoon the spinach dip filling evenly into each bread boat, spreading from end to end.
  6. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the filling is hot and the top is lightly golden.
  7. Cool slightly before slicing into 2-inch portions for serving.

Recipe Tips

  • Squeeze excess moisture from spinach using a clean kitchen towel.
  • Leave thick bread walls to prevent collapse.
  • Let the bread cool slightly before slicing for cleaner cuts.
  • Bake uncovered to keep the crust crisp.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Add chopped artichokes for a spinach-artichoke bread boat.
  • Stir in cooked bacon or sausage for a heartier version.
  • Swap mozzarella for Monterey Jack for extra melt.
  • For a classic Knorr-style version, mix in vegetable soup mix and reduce added salt.

What Can Go Wrong (and how to fix it)

Watery Filling – Spinach was not drained properly. Squeeze dry before mixing.

Soggy Bread – Overfilled or underbaked. Bake until edges are firm and crisp.

Collapsed Loaf – Bread walls too thin. Leave at least 1 inch thickness.

Uneven Melting – Cheese not mixed thoroughly. Combine ingredients evenly before filling.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread

For the Dip:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 onion , diced
  • 1/2 cup bell pepper , diced [See Note 1], about 1/2 of a bell pepper, any color
  • 2 garlic cloves , minced, about 2 teaspoons
  • 1 (10-ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and thoroughly drained (squoze dry)
  • 1 (15-ounce) can diced tomatoes, drained.
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika [See Note 2]
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt , more or less to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper , more or less to taste
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise [See Note 3]
  • 4 oz cream cheese , softened [See Note 4]
  • 1/2 cup sour cream [See Note 5]
  • 1 cup freshly grated mozzarella
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese + 1/4 cup more for optional topping [See Step 7].

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Prepare a rimmed baking sheet [paid link] with aluminum foil, parchment paper [paid link], or a silicon liner (optional – for easy clean up) and set aside.
  • For the french bread, cut a large rectangle about 2 inches deep along the entire legnth of the loaf. Remove the rectangle you cut and, if necessary, continue to hollow out the loaf to create a bread bowl. Set loaf onto the prepared baking sheet and set aside.
  • Heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add onions and sauté for until softened; about 5 minutes. Then reduce the heat to medium and add the bell pepper and garlic. Cook for another minute or two being careful not to burn the garlic.
  • Next, stir in the spinach leaves, tomatoes, paprika, salt, pepper, and mayonnaise until combined.
  • Finally, reduce the heat to low and add the cream cheese, sour cream, and all of the shredded cheeses ( minus the extra Parmesan for topping), and stir until fully melted.
  • Spoon the spinach dip into prepared French bread and top with reserved Parmesan cheese. Bake on a rimmed baking sheet [paid link] for 25-30 minutes or until cheese is melted and the edges of the bread are just slightly golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and allow the bread to cool about 5 minutes before slicing. This helps keep the topping in place and ensure your guests don’t burn themselves on the hot cheese.

Notes

  1. Drain spinach thoroughly
  2. Use softened cream cheese
  3. Leave thick bread walls
  4. Bake uncovered for crisp crust
  5. Cool before slicing
