3-Minute Microwave Chocolate Butterscotch Fudge (Perfectly Layered, Foolproof Squares)

Layered microwave chocolate butterscotch fudge in minutes. Foolproof, creamy squares with chips and condensed milk—perfect for holidays and gifts.

Microwave chocolate butterscotch fudge squares with a chocolate base, creamy butterscotch layer, and chocolate drizzle on parchment.

This layered fudge delivers two classic flavors in one bite: a rich chocolate base and a sweet, creamy butterscotch-white chocolate top. It’s quick, reliable, and made with simple pantry ingredients—ideal for holiday trays, gifting, or a fast dessert that looks impressively “from scratch.”

Why This 3-Minute Microwave Chocolate Butterscotch Fudge Recipe Works

  • Sweetened condensed milk sets the texture without candy thermometers or complicated timing.
  • Microwave melting keeps it fast while still producing a smooth, creamy bite when stirred often.
  • Two distinct layers create a bakery-style look with very little effort.
  • White chocolate boosts the butterscotch layer for a softer, creamier, more balanced sweetness.

Ingredients for microwave chocolate butterscotch fudge including sweetened condensed milk, semi-sweet chips, butterscotch chips, and white chocolate chips.

Ingredients (& why each one works)

  • 12 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips – Builds the deep chocolate base and keeps sweetness in check.
  • 6 oz butterscotch chips – add a caramel-like butterscotch flavor to the top layer.
  • 6 oz white chocolate chips – Smooths and rounds out the butterscotch layer so it sets creamy (not gritty).
  • 2 (14-oz) cans sweetened condensed milk – The key to a firm-but-creamy set; one can per layer.

Optional chocolate garnish

  • 3 oz chocolate chips, melted – For piping or drizzling a decorative finish.

How to Make 3-Minute Microwave Chocolate Butterscotch Fudge

  1. Prep the pan. Line an 8- or 9-inch square pan with foil or wax paper, leaving overhang so you can lift the fudge out later.
  2. Make the chocolate layer. In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine 12 oz semi-sweet chips with 1 can sweetened condensed milk. Microwave about 2–3 minutes total, stirring every 30 seconds until smooth. Spread evenly in the prepared pan.
  3. Let the base set (for clean layers). Allow the chocolate layer to firm up before adding the next layer. (If you want a marbled look, add the second layer while the chocolate is still warm.)
  4. Make the butterscotch layer. Melt the butterscotch and white chocolate chips with the second can of sweetened condensed milk, stirring every 30 seconds, just like the first layer. Spread evenly over the chocolate base.
  5. Chill and slice. Refrigerate for about 3 hours (or until firm). Lift out using the overhang, cut into squares, and add the optional chocolate garnish if desired.

Pro Tips

  • Stir every 30 seconds, no exceptions. This prevents overheating, which can make chips seize and turn grainy.
  • For crisp layers: let the chocolate base cool until it’s set to the touch before spreading the top layer.
  • For cleaner cuts: chill well, then use a large knife warmed under hot water and wiped dry between slices.

Recipe Variations

  • Marbled top: Pour the butterscotch layer while the chocolate base is still warm and gently swirl.
  • Nutty crunch: Sprinkle chopped toasted pecans or walnuts over the chocolate layer before adding the top layer.
  • Salted finish: Add a light pinch of flaky salt over the top before chilling to balance sweetness.
  • Mocha twist: Replace a small handful of semi-sweet chips with espresso chips (or add a tiny pinch of instant espresso powder while melting).

Serving Suggestions

  • Add to a holiday cookie tray with shortbread, thumbprints, and biscotti.
  • Serve with coffee or hot cocoa for an easy dessert moment.
  • Cut smaller pieces and pair with vanilla ice cream (fudge as a “candy bite” on the side).

New Life for Leftovers

  • Fudge sundae topper: Chop and sprinkle over ice cream or yogurt parfaits.
  • Brownie upgrade: Fold chunks into brownie batter or press pieces on top right after baking.
  • Gift jars: Layer small cubes in a jar with other candies for quick, shareable treats.

Storage

  • Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container with parchment between layers for up to 2 weeks.
  • Freezer: Wrap tightly and freeze up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge for best texture.
  • Room temperature (short term): If your kitchen is cool, it can sit out for a few hours on a dessert table, but it keeps its best texture chilled.

People Often Ask (FAQs)

Do I really need two cans of sweetened condensed milk?
Yes—this recipe uses two 14-oz cans, one for each layer.

Why do I have to stir so often in the microwave?
Chocolate chips can overheat quickly; stirring every 30 seconds helps them melt evenly and reduces the risk of seizing.

Can I make it marbled instead of layered?
Yes. Add the second layer while the chocolate layer is still warm, then swirl for a marbled look.

Can I make this on the stovetop instead?
Yes. The post notes it can be made using a double boiler [paid link], though the microwave method is the fastest.

Ingredients

  • 12 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 6 oz Butterscotch Chips
  • 6 oz White Chocolate Chips
  • 2 14-oz cans Sweetened Condensed Milk

Optional Chocolate Garnish

  • 3 oz Chocolate chips, melted

Instructions

  • Line an 8- or 9-inch square pan with aluminum foil or wax paper, extending the paper over edges of pan for easier removal once set.
  • In a large microwave-safe bowl, add 12-oz of chocolate chips with 1 can of sweetened condensed milk. Heat in the microwave for about 2 to 3 minutes; stirring EVERY 30 seconds until all the chips are melted. Be careful not to overheat the chocolate as this will cause it to seize up. Spread the melted chocolate evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan. Set aside and allow to firm up to keep the two distinct layers. For a marbled look, you can add the second layer while the chocolate layer is warm. In the photo example, the chocolate layer was allowed to firm up before adding the butterscotch layer.
  • Once the chocolate layer has reached your desired temperature, melt the butterscotch and white chocolate chips with the second can of sweetened condensed milk. Heat the chips just as directed above stirring EVERY 30 seconds being careful not to overheat the chips. Spread evenly over the chocolate layer.
  • Chill for 3 hours or until firm. Remove from the pan by lifting the edges of the paper. Cut into squares. Add optional piped chocolate decoration to each piece.

  1. So, you say to mix a can of the sweetened condensed milk with the chocolate chips. Then later, you say to melt the butterscotch and white chocolate chips with the remaining can of sweetened condensed milk. The ingredients only has 1 14oz can of condensed milk in it. So do I need 2 cans of the milk?

  2. Hi, Sounds like a fun and easy recipe. But, maybe I missed it? Where is the White chocolate Going? And, also, please tell us how you did the lovely swirls of chocolate on top of squares? That is what I need to learn to do! Thanks for sharing a great recipe!

    • Hi Vicki,
The white chocolate goes in with the butterscotch chips. I’ve added it to the instructions. Thank you for pointing that out. For the swirls on top, I melted some extra chocolate chips and individually piped those on top of each piece. It’s not necessary to the recipe but looks festive.
