Make a Homemade Instant Vanilla Latte Mix at home in minutes. This DIY mix is budget-friendly, giftable, and perfect for hot or iced coffee cravings.
This mix gives you that coffeehouse-style vanilla latte taste on demand, without the weekly cost of store-bought drink canisters. It blends into a smooth, creamy drink, works for both hot and iced lattes, and makes an easy homemade gift for the coffee lovers in your life.
Why This Recipe Works
- Blending everything into a fine powder helps the mix dissolve more smoothly in water.
- Dry milk powder and creamer create a creamy, latte-like body without the need for milk.
- Instant coffee granules deliver strong coffee flavor instantly—no brewing required.
- Vanilla pudding mix boosts vanilla flavor and adds a richer, more “café-style” mouthfeel.
Ingredients (& What Each One Does)
** You can find the full recipe ingredients and instructions on the printable recipe card below.
- Nonfat dry milk powder: builds the creamy base and softens the coffee’s bitterness.
- Powdered nondairy French Vanilla creamer: adds vanilla flavor, extra creaminess, and sweetness.
- Instant coffee granules: provide the coffee backbone and keep this truly “instant.”
- Sugar: balances bitterness and makes the mix taste like a coffeehouse latte.
- Instant vanilla pudding mix: deepens vanilla flavor and gives a smoother, richer sip.
How to Make Homemade Instant Vanilla Latte Mix
** You can find the full recipe ingredients and instructions on the printable recipe card below.
Make the mix
- Add the dry milk powder, vanilla creamer, instant coffee granules, sugar, and vanilla pudding mix to a blender [paid link].
- Cover and process until the mixture becomes a fine, uniform powder.
- Store in an airtight container for up to 6 months.
To make a drink (hot or iced)
- Hot latte: Dissolve 1/4 cup of mix in hot water, stirring until well combined.
- Iced latte: Dissolve 1/4 cup mix in hot water, stir in cold water, then blend with ice until smooth.
Pro Tips
- Blend in short bursts first, then finish with a longer blend to avoid powder “puffs” and get the smoothest texture.
- If your mix clumps in storage, shake the container or re-blend briefly to return it to a fine powder.
- Prefer a stronger coffee taste? Use slightly less water per serving (instead of adding more coffee to the batch).
Recipe Variations
- Mocha Vanilla Latte Mix: Add 2–4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder to the blender [paid link].
- Caramel-Vanilla Latte Mix: Swap the vanilla pudding mix for caramel pudding mix (same amount) for a caramel-forward flavor.
- Spiced Vanilla Latte Mix: Add 1–2 teaspoons ground cinnamon plus a pinch of nutmeg for a cozy twist.
- Decaf Version: Use decaf instant coffee granules to keep the flavor without the caffeine.
Serving Suggestions
- Pair with biscotti, scones, banana bread, coffee cake, or a simple butter cookie for an easy café-at-home moment.
- For gifting: jar the mix with a note that says “Use 1/4 cup mix per drink” and include a small scoop.
New Life for Leftovers
If you have extra mix hanging around, try it as:
- A sweet “latte” dusting over buttered toast or oatmeal
- A flavor boost in homemade whipped cream (whipped cream + a spoonful of mix)
- A quick coffee-vanilla accent in pancake or waffle batter (stir a little into the dry ingredients)
Storage
- Store the powder in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
- Keeps up to 6 months when sealed well.
People Often Ask (FAQs)
Can I make this without a blender [paid link]?
Yes, but the texture won’t be as fine. Whisk [paid link] very thoroughly, then sift to remove lumps.
Why do I need hot water first for iced lattes?
A small amount of heat helps dissolve the mix fully before chilling and blending with ice.
Can I reduce the sugar?
You can. Lowering the sugar will make the coffee taste more pronounced and less “coffeehouse sweet.”
Can I use decaf instant coffee?
Absolutely—swap 1:1 with decaf granules for the same method and serving size.
Can I mix it with milk instead of water?
You can, but the mix already contains dry milk/creamer.
How much mix do I use per drink?
Use 1/4 cup mix per latte (hot or iced).

I did not add the vanilla pudding, as I did not have to. My goal was to replicate the same taste in the Starbucks Via Instant Vanilla Latte mix, a 1.09 oz packet, which the company stupidly discontinued. My only change to the original recipe above would be to cut back on the additional sugar, which was just too much (I cut out a quarter cup, and may cut more). I did basically the same thing with the STBX mix, which specified a packet to 8 oz. of hot water. That was just waaaay too much sweetness for me. So I modified that by using their one packet to 16 oz. of water (not 8 oz) The taste was perfect. So, save yourself some calories, which serve no purpose except to increase weight and heart disease anyway. You may have to do a few trial-and-error tastings to get to your taste requirements.
I’m addicted to the Maxwell House cappuccino mix, that you mix with milk. Can I mix this with milk and add ice?
I believe you could but the base already includes the powdered milk so that all that is required is water. It’s still creamy once the milk reconstituted with the water.
Made this for a camping trip. So luxurious to have my latte even at the lake
